During renovations, the house was brought into the 21st Century with careful attention to maintaining the look and feel of a country farmhouse. Each bedroom was given a private bathroom and closet, which meant sacrificing one of the original rooms and making additions onto some of the others. There are seven fireplaces in the house, each with its original mantel. The fireplaces had been bricked-in through the years to support furnaces, but were reopened when the home was renovated. Not all are usable for open fires. The fireboxes are unusual in that they did not have solid floors and hearths. Instead, they were built into the floor joists as sandboxes.
